Hair Gets Kinky: Interview with Natural Hair Blogger Jessica Gray

jess from kinkyTwist outs, braid outs, coils, and puffs, natural hair lingo is rapidly taking over mainstream pop culture topics. From protective styling, hair typing, to product junkies, natural hair is making a comeback, (for those that thought it left).  Within the last few years it seems that more people are embracing their natural tresses and declaring that “I am not my hair” and are boldly rocking their curls, kinks, and coils for the world to see.

I personally discovered Jess’s website when I decided to go natural almost two years ago and I fell in love with how honest and straightforward her website is. If you are newly natural or just looking for great styles and tips on products her website Hair Gets Kinky is the place to go.

LCC had the honor of interviewing the voice behind the blog Hair Gets Kinky and here is her story behind her natural curls:

LCC: Tell us about your natural hair story

JESS: I got my last relaxer shortly after my 13th birthday. There was no natural hair "movement" and it wasn't the hot thing to do. In fact, I was teased when I stopped wearing my hair straight as often. But I was tired of having to get my hair trimmed so often because of breakage and my hair wasn't even bone-straight like I wanted it to be anyway so a relaxer felt like a waste of time. Plus they don't smell too great and really burn! I didn't Big Chop because it never crossed my mind to do so and 13-year-old Jess wasn't cutting off all of her hair anyway. I wore my hair pressed or in braids or twists all through high school until I got more bold and experimental with styles in college.

LCC: What inspired you to start blogging about your natural hair journey?

Jess: People always asked me about my hair regimen and I would try to sum it all up in one sitting. But it was really difficult because people usually had so many questions that needed way more attention than I could give all at once. At first, I was simply blogging about random topics and occasionally answering people's hair questions in a few posts, but over time I realized that all of the hair-related posts were taking over my blog. I eventually decided to focus on natural hair and launched HairGetsKinky.com!

LCC: What is your summer time go-to style?

Jess:I love big hair so you'll always see me fluffin' out a twist-out or rockin' my fro during the summer. The bigger, the better! This summer I will probably be wearing box braids and Marley twists quite often because running a summer camp and my workout schedule are easier on my hair when I can just get up and go.

LCC: What is your current hair regimen?

Jess: My regimen is pretty simple. I shampoo and condition about every 10 days (one week can be too often & two weeks is too long of a wait!). If I find that my workout schedule requires me to need to cleanse my hair and scalp more often, I might co-wash to hold me until my next shampoo or simply rinse my hair. I deep condition on an as-needed basis, which is about every other wash. After using a leave-in and sealing with coconut oil, if I don't have any major hair styles planned, I let my hair air-dry in twists.

LCC: What can a reader of your blog expect to find?

Jess: I am very open and honest on my blog. I'm also very goofy. I write like I am talking to one of my friends and I hope that's the vibe you all get when you visit my blog. I want people to feel comfortable asking me anything and sharing their adventures in hair, beauty and other parts of life with me too!

jess from kinky 1LCC: What is the one aspect you love about being natural?

Jess: The versatility of natural hair is amazing. I love it. And no one's hair is exactly the same!

LCC: Tell us one silly fact about Jess

Jess: I'm accident-prone and the silliest things happen to me on a daily basis. To date, I think getting my hair stuck in a closing Metro train door makes the top of the list!
