A Dream Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

-Langston Hughes

At church yesterday the guest Preacher delivered a message about Dreams.  During her sermon she referenced the infamous poem by Poet Langston Hughes, “A Dream Deferred”.  After the service, the notion of a dream deferred stuck to me and I began to ask the question, what happens to a dream deferred?

Growing up I’ve always dreamt of becoming a lawyer and in my adult years I still do want to make that a dream come true, however, there are some obstacles.  These obstacles keep arising and it makes me wander is this a dream I should pursue? Battling back and forth with myself I began to doubt that becoming a lawyer just wasn’t for me, so I began to search for alternative career goals.  Upon discovering another career path (in which I love) I can see how a profession of a lawyer could, too, fit in the new career path.  It seems as if no matter what task I do or what I may think of the notion of becoming a lawyer can somehow play a part.  So I’m wandering is a dream that keeps reoccurring in my mind really deferred?

During service the Preacher spoke about how timing is everything but only in God’s time it will be done.  And then it came to me like an epiphany, perhaps it is not my time to see that dream come trueYET.  The fact that this dream constantly reveals itself to me, leads to believe that it is in me to accomplish it but the timing must be right.  Now the next step is figuring out when that time is.  But I think I’ll know it once it comes.  I’m a firm believer in faith and I have faith that my dream is not deferred it is just waiting for the right time to blossom.

On that note, if you have a dream that you feel deep in your heart you want to accomplish DO IT!  I believe there is a reason our mind keeps back tracking and bringing those dreams back to remind us they are not deferred, it is just waiting for the right time to shine.

So to answer my own question, what happens to a dream deferred? I think it just lingers there in our minds and hearts until we achieve it.
